Mercury Combust, now you see me, now “cazimi”

Mercury combustOn 12 September 2016, as Mercury exactly aligns with the Sun at 23h30 GMT (01h30 RSA time 13 Sept), we call it not merely a conjunction, but a total “Combust”. So if you want to harness a mindset that’s on fire, a mental state that’s fired up, “combustable” or ready to exhibit spontaneous combustion, then here is your window.

Mercury, like Venus, orbits within the earth’s orbit, or between Earth and Sun, so from our geocentric point of view they always appear relatively close together in the sky. Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, and so the “Winged Messenger” remains archetypally the perennial close associate, side kick and brother of mighty Apollo. And the “Goddess of love” also keeps close association on the other side, never wandering further than a sidelong glance away.

Mercury appears like a pendulum that swings 28 degrees to the left of the Sun and then stops and returns to swing 28 degrees to the right. He then returns to complete the cycle, taking a total of 116 days altogether. The point at which he crosses the central position of the Sun, is called the conjunction, of which there are two, as in any pendulum swing – away and back again, if you get the picture. And of these two conjunction moments, one is with Mercury this side and one other side of the Sun in relation to our earth. (See graphic)

Well tonight Mercury is crossing the Sun on our earth side, between Earth And Sun, called the “Inferior conjunction”, visible like a little speck on a telescope strong enough to observe it. And this marks the start of this specific cycle. Mercury then passes by the Sun, and in a few days appears to slow down, and becomes stationary around the Equinox point of 22 September this year, marking the end of his retrograde phase, and then slowly appears to speed up again, catching up with the Sun on 27 October, marking the “Superior conjunction” moment, when Mercury passes behind the Sun from our point of view. You can even look at your own personal birth chart horoscope and determine where Mercury was in this cycle, in relation to the Sun on your day of birth, and thus find out more about the way in which your mind works. Was Mercury ahead of or behind the Sun, was he moving forward (direct) or backwards (retrograde)?

Now when Mercury is within 8 degrees or less of the Sun, as it has been for just under a week, leading up to today’s conjunction, and as it will be again in the week to come, then he is “under the beams” and invisible to plain sight due to the glare of the Sun and thus considered somewhat weakened in strength and influence, adding possibly even more blockages to communication than the already retrograde influence suggests. But for one night only – and tonight’s the night – when Mercury comes to within 17 astronomical minutes (there are 60 mins in one degree) and less of the Sun’s position, then he is called “Cazimi” a medieval word denoting a moment of genius, insight, breakthrough revelation, and the like. This window of alignment and opportunity only lasts a few hours and will be open in the hours leading up to midnight and the ones thereafter, as Mercury reaches the heart of the Sun. So grasp and seize the moment, “Carpe Diem” for time and tide wait for no man and “tempis fugit” or time flies while he who hesitates is lost.

Mercury combust

Mercury cazimi talisman

Time may be conspicuous by its absence in the spiritual dimension, where only the eternal now is evident, and that present moment is always available to us all via meditation, stilling the Mercurial mind, and observing the temporary illusory chimera that make up this world for what they are. However, since we all still generally need to live by the laws of time which are governed by the planetary cycles, then the immanent Mercury moment as he conjuncts the Sun, then use this opportunity to consecrate a new mindset for yourself, harness that flash of inspiration, burn the midnight oil, and come out the other side with the plan of action, the answer to your riddle and the key to your future. If not now then when? If not you then who?

Mercury combust opposition Pluto part 2 – Hillary Clinton email scandal judged by the FBI

Hillary Clinton’s email scandal being defended by the FBI is a third bombshell – after the damning Chilcot Report and feeble Oscar Pistorius sentence – that has exploded over the past 48 hours of the current Mercury combust in opposition to Pluto now.

Mercury combustSun conjunct or combust Mercury is visible in the drama of this upcoming leader of the nation (symbolised by the Sun) and her communication issues (symbolised by Mercury the winged messenger) all opposed by the head of the FBI – a perfect manifestation of Pluto, lord of the Underworld, the secret world, the secret service, who seems to be hiding something. 48 hours after FBI director James Comey found Hillary Clinton to be innocent of compromising national communication security, the government of USA in Capitol Hill holds a hearing asking the FBI director how he came to these “mystifying” conclusions. This scandal could shake the election and the future of USA, and certainly faith in the government of USA.

At the hearing set up to scrutinise Director James Comey, he swears under oath to the committee. The mishandling of classified info is being questioned. “Mens Rea” is the legal Latin term for “what were you thinking at the time”. Also known as “Motive”. He says “great carelessness” was involved, but not knowingly breaking the law by Clinton when setting up her private email server in her basement at her home, a known unauthorised location that could bypass normal security checks. So her motive, he reckons, was innocent although the action was foolish. General Patraeus did something similar in recent US history and he got time in jail, so one wonders who is protecting Hillary on her march to being president of USA? This woman, herself an attorney and thus held to a higher account, has compromised the security of the country and she is being lined up to lead the nation. Who really controls this situation I wonder, who holds the power, when the measure of the law is so easily shifted, when the head of the FBI himself can protect her when many other members of parliament see her actions to be clearly and obviously foolish, illegal and outright criminal? She or her team even ended up keeping and deliberately deleting some specific security emails that she sent so that nobody would even know what they really said. All these acts are probably going on all the time in the shadow government, but this prospective president got caught openly doing it, as if knowingly beyond reproach. It leads one to conclude that the elite are playing by different rules and thus shatters the confidence in truth, liberty and the pursuit of justice. Mercury combustThey have been found out to be behaving like Mafia, another Pluto archetype. Nixon fell when Pluto transited his 10th house of public image, and rightly so, but here Hillary is walking free from what should be her Watergate moment. Some dark lord seems to be pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

The Sun conjunct Mercury, also known as Mercury combust, both closely aligned now in opposition to Pluto, has brought into the psyche of the world the unmasking, the exposing of the shadow world going on amongst the political giants of UK and USA. Hidden in the shadow Plutonian realm all this time, the momentary alignment of Mercury and Sun has coincided with the exposing or shedding light onto the activities enacted in the shadow state. The message is out for the world to hear. It’s the battle of light versus dark, Sun in opposition to Pluto.

In our own personal lives we can also examine our hearts, weigh them against a feather and check our moral temperature. Is the shadow someone or something out there in the form of the other, or can we be introspective and see the shadow within ourselves too? When unconscious contents wants to come to the surface it is usually Mercury in the guise of the analyst, shaman, messenger, or our own conscience, who is able to travel to the realms of the underworld, the realms of Pluto, the personal or collective unconscious, and bring back to the solar light of conscious awareness, that hidden psychic contents, that mystery, treasure or potential power/chi force/shakti that empowers us or heals us due to being made evident. By acknowledging our lower nature as opposed to trying to suppress it, we rather consciously integrate it, preventing it from exploding out in an unhealthy way. Purity is the force, and truthfulness is the last leg of Dharma or righteousness in this Kali Yuga, this Iron Age of quarrel and hypocrisy. When purity is combined with truthfulness, we become empowered by a healthy conscience and ease of access to psychic contents, because we are not losing energy trying to suppress or hide the truth, from others or ourselves.

Nobody is perfect, and wholeness includes integrating the light and shadow sides of our consciousness, as described by Jung and others along the Way. Fortunately we are not about to run a country, but if we were, we should be beyond reproach, not tarnished by corruption and deceit before even entering office, like South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma. If Clinton wins and becomes president in November 2016, the world is destined to have three women running the biggest countries globally, namely USA, UK and Germany, for it has officially just been decided that the next leader of the UK Conservative party is going to be a woman. Remember Thatcher and weep. Sisters are doing it for themselves, it seems. Let’s just pray that they are doing it for the benefit of their nations too.

Mercury combust opposition Pluto – seeing our shadow for what he is

As Mercury crosses over the Sun now (occurring six times a year) it is considered combust, a term used for a planet that conjuncts the Sun. Simultaneously this Sun-Mercury combination is one degree away from a direct opposition to Pluto, marking a time now that sees the truth come out and the “combustion” it caused has ignited the world in flames of outrage at tyrants exposed once more. I’m talking about the two bombshells dropped at this alignment, namely the release of the Chilcot Report and the Oscar Pistorius judgement and sentencing.

sun opposition plutoThe Chilcot report has taken seven years to be released and in two million words UK has been systematically unmasked for the moral failure of invading Iraq all those years ago in 2002/3, just after 9/11. Of course it is obvious that they were compelled into this moral failure by USA – the real villains in this tragedy. When Blair wrote to Bush “I am with you come whatever” it becomes obvious that a weak UK was the lapdog of USA in following them into an evil act resulting in the death of between 100 000 and 1 000 000 innocent civilians, depending on who you hear from.

Sun opposition Pluto is associated with a compulsive power drive, accompanied by defiance and an aura of forcefulness. It suggests a mood that is so defensive and assertive at the slightest perceived threat, that others are repulsed by the abuse of that power. It also suggests a time when a major psychological realignment can occur, which can – if handled well – help one to dispel the perception of imagined danger and bring about a more evolved degree of tolerance. When combined with Mercury also opposite Pluto, it reveals a time of damning or harsh speech, confrontation and challenge, bringing about emotionally charged reactions to credibility being questioned. Nowhere was this more evident than in the shocking and shameful revelation of UK’s (and USA’s) criminal invasion of Iraq and subsequent murder of a million innocents, along with the entire devastation of a country that is to this day a hell on earth, now actually worse off that it was under the supposed bogeyman Saddam. It was also perfectly seen in the emotional confession of the culprit Tony Blair (Prime Minister of UK who gave the consent to invade Iraq) as this alignment occurred.

Of course the words “criminal” and “murder” were not directly used in the typically reserved, understated and polite Chilcot Report, but I and others, also inflamed by the outrageously immoral and violent behaviour, also aroused by the Sun/Mercury combust opposition Pluto, are using these words because we are disgusted and repulsed by the acts of horror that occurred during and subsequent to the Iraq invasion and destruction. The governments of UK and USA are to blame more than the citizens, for although voting to invade Iraq, many UK citizens also opposed the invasion and voted thus, like the Scottish and others. USA citizens certainly had no choice but to go to war when their murderous president dictated so. Indeed Saddam, the head of Iraq at that time, was himself a tyrant, killing and oppressing his people, particularly the Kurds, a people deprived of their own state by the ignorant and selfish drawing of borders in the Middle east by UK and other colonisers back in the day. But he was captured and killed within the first year of the invasion, which went on for years thereafter, resulting in unnecessary innocent deaths. Therefore, based on the lie of WMD, USA and UK governments can rightly be seen as perfect examples of power hungry tyrants on par with Saddam himself, tyrants and murderers that need to be held accountable.

In true Sun opposition Pluto style, they saw their shadow out there in the form of Saddam, they perceived in their shadow projection a global enemy with WMD, which was basically their own projection of their own villainous darkness. In typical overly defensive style they used excess force and thus destroyed an ancient land with great heritage, destroyed countless priceless archaeological artefacts, almost all of which are today gone, either smashed, looted or lost to the world for ever. If the US/UK invasion didn’t destroy them then the subsequent ISIS intolerance did. The bitter irony is that the wreck of Iraq that today lies under siege of ISIS is directly because of the US/UK invasion. The west is to blame for ISIS. That is how low we have stooped in our ignorance and greed and cowboy “might is right” mentality. Therefore I call UK and USA governments criminal and murderous to their face. Blair himself had to admit it under this Chilcot revelation, and we shall see if he suffers further consequences, despite having apologised while saying it was the right thing to do at the time. Meanwhile USA, the real villain, as I said earlier, says nothing.

Fortunately this current Sun/Mercury opposition to Pluto is also a time of potential psychological healing, where one can bring to the conscious “sun” light of day the shadow elements of the unconscious, symbolised by Pluto, mythic god of the Underworld. By admitting to their wrongdoings, UK and USA governments can rectify their power hungry, oil-grabbing ways, can own once again their projected shadow and admit that they were wrong in using pre-emptive strike on a country that had no ability to harm them whatsoever. Then they can make recompense to Iraq, go their ways and sin no more. Oh, wait a minute, they are still at it in Syria, they are still seeing their shadow in the shape of Russia, where Putin in the bogeyman of the day to them. Well enough people have seen through the projection and are busy revealing the illusion in the Empires new clones.

As for the sentencing of Plutonian Oscar Pistorius to six years in jail for murder, when others get double that for assault, well in South Africa “white is right” and money and privilege still overrule justice, so we have a long way to go here too, until we can give up seeing our shadow in every black man and realise that we all have a shadow, unconscious or Plutonian dark side, which when illuminated by the Sun-like consciousness can be seen to what it really is – our friend, source of power and greatest ally.

Life’s a Marathon Comrades – the horoscope of a marathon mind

This weekend’s Earthy Grand Trine coincides with the Mutable Grand Cross mentioned in a previous post. It also coincides with one of the most grueling athletic events in South Africa, if not the world, namely the Comrades Marathon.

MercuryThis marks the second Earthy Grand Trine this month, the first being when the Sun and Moon joined the Jupiter – Pluto trine in the first week of May. Now it’s the chance for Mercury to join the Jupiter – Pluto alignment and again make their trine aspect a grand one. Curiously Jupiter is the one pivotal planet involved in both the Grand Trine and the Grand Cross. Since Jupiter is in Virgo now, the multiple alignments could bring material challenges, like service delivery, health issues and financial challenges for example, but it also provides the ability to surmount these same challenges, either through refining the daily regimen, being dutiful, attending to details, going the extra mile or putting service before pleasure.

Even in the run up to the Olympic Games in Brazil later this year, crises are arising with only months to go before the kick-off. Just this week – during these alignments – Rio was seen to be medically unfit to host the event due to pollution, particularly in the surrounding waters, so high that contamination and sickness is almost guaranteed for participants who will arrive from all over the world. This is practically unprecedented in Olympic history, where the entire international event could be scuppered due to lack of attention to health, to cleanliness and sanitation – all Jupiter in Virgo issues. Remember Jupiter has been going retrograde for some months now, and is still hardly moving forward after its recent station direct earlier in May. As a result the Olympic clean-up is moving slower than expected, but there is hope that it will be sufficient and timely. The other problem is of course the Zika Virus, a life threatening disease plaguing Brazil on the eve of its finest hour. All these health issues combined may just be too much for the politically and economically embattled country to deal with. With Jupiter in Virgo now, purity and refinement are the issues at stake. So many planets are symbolically applying pressure on Jupiter here in this rare simultaneous Grand Trine, plus Grand Cross, that it will take an Olympian effort to rise to the standards required to clean up the act and meet the needs on all levels. The same may apply in our individual personal lives too.

I want to focus though on the current Grand Trine and Grand Cross, falling simultaneously on the Comrades Marathon event of Sunday 29 May, which will be an equally daunting test of one’s mettle, and what it takes to endure such super-intense athletic stress when running around 90km in just over 6 hours. Not only does an athlete here require topmost physical fitness, but more importantly steely mental stamina to run a race such as this. If you look at the logo of the Comrades Marathon and the images on the medals, you will see that Mercury, the winged messenger features as the patron god. Coincidentally this race is run every year during the month of Gemini the twins, which just happens to be ruled by Mercury himself, that fleet-footed, winged-ankled racer of the zodiac. So it is no surprise I suppose that last year’s winner and second place in the women’s category, both South Africans, have in their horoscopes Sun conjunct Mercury. That is too much of a coincidence. Also the second place Charne Bosman, is herself a Gemini Sun sign, with Mercury obviously also then in Gemini. Certainly these two women perfectly fit the archetype of the Gemini twins, personifications of the Mercurial winged runner so aptly pictured on the logo and medals.Mercury

Although last year’s winner, Caroline Wostmann (January 18, 1983), has Sun conjunct Mercury in Capricorn, and second place Charne Bosman (June 11, 1985) has Sun conjunct Mercury in Gemini, both are blessed with Mercury’s fleetness of foot it seems, if these results are anything to go by. This adds further evidence to the astrological data base of case studies, generally speaking. Now we have a degree of correlation between marathon winners and their horoscopes. However, that’s not the only coincidence between these winners’ charts. Although they are unique individuals with differing abilities and strengths which enable them to perform these Olympian feats, both also share the super powerful Mars trine Pluto aspect in their horoscopes. This is known to provide enormous vitality and potent willpower. Also the self-discipline required to direct that will is just the ingredient that seems to enable these marathon winners. Caroline, the gold medallist, actually also won the Two Oceans Marathon earlier last year too. So in other words here we have a psyche that is able to focus all its reserves into one direction, one goal, so that internal friction is eliminated. Thus no energy is lost due to conflicting demands due to obvious exhaustion in other parts of the psyche or body, and the will is able to override the need to alleviate the suffering involved to win. Mars is the athletic influence and Pluto is the dynamic willpower, combined harmoniously in a trine aspect in these two winning athletes. Caroline said in an interview just after winning last year: “I’m in a huge amount of pain, I pushed myself to the limit…I’m aching all over but I’m so happy – it’s worth all the pain.” Now that is what you get from an “eye on the prize” Capricorn, hill-climbing goat, with the material strength and singleness of purpose Capricorn confers. Added to that the Mars trine Pluto and you have a marathon winner. Add to this the fact that in her chart Saturn is also conjunct Pluto and in trine aspect to Mars, and you get the ambition, discipline, desire for status and determination to get gold or achieve record-breaking feats. Let’s hope her knees and skeleton (associated with Capricorn and Saturn) hold out under the tremendous pounding of winning marathons.

Lacking these Saturnian influences in her chart, Charne Bosman, the silver medalist, does however have natal Mercury also in a wide trine to Pluto. And that is exactly part of the current Grand Trine alignment with Jupiter that we have occurring this weekend. So she will show us how it’s done. For ultimately we all have to run our own marathon, namely our long race called life on earth. And to pace ourselves during this marathon event lasting decades generally, it ends up being the mind that is the most important muscle in completing the event in style and with grace and in a position where we can say we deserve a medal. After all, we don’t need to compete against the other runners, but rather against our own minds, or against the modes of nature that sway our minds. We have to compete against our own lower selves to bring out our personal best, thereby saying we have qualified, passed the test, won the marathon of life. And this current Mercury trine Pluto, as seen in our silver medallist, and in this weekend’s Grand Trine, is part of what it takes.

Mercury mindI say this because Mercury, the winged messenger, represents in astrology the rational mind, and Pluto, as mentioned earlier, suggests will power among other things. The trine aspect between the two in a chart is thus known by some as “the transcendent mind”. Pluto is traditionally the higher octave of Mars, both rulers of Scorpio. In other words we are not talking any more about athletic Martial strength or physical stamina as the ingredient required to succeed in this marathon of ours, for naturally the body weakens with age and strength is lost. Yet the mind endures, and carries us onward until our last breath, much longer than the body sometimes. And it is therefore mental stamina that really makes a marathon winner. Even Arnold “the governator” and Mr Universe body building winner, said that it is more in the mind than in the muscle that success is first to be found. And Mercury trine Pluto guarantees the ability to concentrate the mind. It is the gift of the meditator, who can focus that mind to the exclusion of any outside distractions. We all need this current Mercury trine Pluto quality of mind, for it provides a determined desire to succeed on our journey – the desire required to win an ultra-marathon like the Comrades.

When combined with Jupiter, as it is this weekend, the Grand trine formed between Mercury and Pluto should allow us to harness our wondering minds, focus them in meditation practice, fitness training or scholarly study, to the exclusion of distractions, but also to the degree that we are not overly self-absorbed, but rather discover our hidden mental abilities and the way in which they can be utilized for the betterment of all society. Also Jupiter reminds us here that we all gained our skills by learning from a guide or teacher in our chosen field. Curiously even our gold and silver Comrades Marathon medalists here both happen to be trained by the same coach – Lindsey Parry, which goes to show that having a qualified guide or trainer in your corner goes a long way to mastering the mind and harnessing the magic that lies within.

Mercury “Cazimi” at the heart of the Sun

Merury conjunct sunToday is the day that Mercury goes Cazimi – into the heart of the Sun. The Sun’s rays are so bright that any planet within 8 degrees of the Sun is considered “combust”, and thus its strength in a chart is considered diminished. However, the exception to this is when the planet comes to an exact alignment, within 17 minutes (there are 60 minutes to a degree of zodiac arc.) At this position, as we have today from sunrise South African time at 05h15 in my location, the planet is more powerful than ever in its influence. This peaks at 16h00, which would be an ideal time to conduct your ritual, design your talisman, offer your prayer or meditation to invoke the blessings of Mercury, and continues until 04h00 tomorrow18 Nov. Since Mercury rules the intellect in a horoscope, this will make the intellect burn brighter, so to speak. It is as if the Winged Messenger has entered the throne room for a personal audience with the Sun King directly. The symbolism of Mercury reminds me of Narada Muni, the transcendental space man and eternal sage mentioned in the ancient Vedic texts like Bhagavat Purana, who could travel to all worlds or dimensions – Hell, Earth and Heaven – via the sound vibration he made on his Vina musical instrument. He is allowed the audience of the Divine Lord Vishnu whenever he chooses.

These astrological terms originate way back in the mists of time to the ancient Greeks and Arabs at least since the time of Christ and before, as well as the Ancient Indian masters who even pre-date that. Then the Medieval scholars carried it forward, and it has been handed down ever since. So these are not new concepts, but rather tried and tested observations based on the movement of the stars in the night sky.

Any baby born today with Mercury conjunct or so tightly aligned with the Sun, is blessed to be in possession of some kind of brilliance, and will very likely be an intellectual or business genius. So congratulations to you! Mercury orbitThere are two such points of exact alignment of Mercury and the Sun about 3 times a year, making 6 days in total, and 3 of them, the “Superior conjunctions” – when Mercury is on the far side of the Sun from Earth’s point of view – are most potent. And today is one of those. It is like the full moon stage of this particular planetary cycle. Actually all planets can make this exact alignment with the Sun whenever they are seen as conjunct, though such times occur randomly and less often throughout the year. Because Mercury is so close to the Sun it occurs most often. Venus, being also closer than us to the Sun, also has more regular such exact alignments. And when a planet becomes thus invisible due to the effulgence of the Sun’s rays, its influence becomes less physical and more astral or ethereal in the personality on that day, or in the life of one born that day. So if this article seems highly intellectual yet a bit ethereal or abstract, you know why.
