The Fifth Chakra – The Throat Chakra

The fifth chakra is situated at the base of the neck in the throat. This chakra is represented by the blue Vishuddha mandala (purity), the element of ether and symbolised by the human race.

Chakra systemThe throat chakra influences dreaming, communication, artistic expression, self-belief, good judgment, wisdom, out of body experiences, clairaudience and truthfulness.

The chakra physically influences the thyroid gland, throat, teeth, mouth and the immune system.

If the throat chakra is in balance, it allows us to express our truth, which in turn helps us to feel happy and centred. You can also use the throat chakra while you are meditating to connect with your higher guidance (self).

Too little flow influences the physical in the forms of communication problems, sore throats, earaches or infections, thyroid problems, chronic colds, speech difficulties, depression and chronic tiredness, which can also lead to the control of others through dishonesty and deceit. If the flow is too great it can make you dominating, inflexible, egotistical, have a self-righteous and a big-headed attitude.

A blocked throat chakra can cause you to be nervous and scared causing introspection, where you tend to keep your thoughts to yourself and opposing any sort of change. Balance this chakra by singing, listening to good music, chanting, looking at the sky, going for walks, watching your breath and daily meditations outside.

A healing exercise to assist the throat chakra’s balance:

The shoulder Stand is a good yoga pose for healing this area.

Sing and chant daily.

Venus square Pluto – Bring me a higher love

Higher love Venus square Pluto astrologyAs Venus squares Pluto this weekend and then makes an exact opposition to Uranus on Tuesday 24th, the Cardinal T-square formed between these three planets may oblige us to face up to challenges in our field of relationships and love. Relationships affect all our lives, even single hermits, because to exist on the planet we are obliged to relate to others in some capacity or another. We are social beings living in a society after all.

To begin with the Pluto – Uranus square has been with us for some years now, on and off, and it is the arrival of Venus in the coming days that activates this alignment still further, making a perhaps impersonal or generational influence a more personal one. The positions of Pluto and Uranus in the Cardinal signs of Capricorn and Aries respectively already indicate a powerful energetic influence, where an impatience and determination to fulfil one’s desires, whether for power or relationship, may incline one to use any means possible, fair or foul, in a selfish and roughshod urge, like that of a Jihadi terrorist who disregards the rules of the game as well as the innocents who may be injured along the way. It is the perfect recipe for one who is willing to wage war against the established authority to achieve their ends. In a healthier psyche this combination may manifest as the desire to achieve the top regardless of the challenges and hardship, like a rock climber battling the elements or corporate executive for example. So we need to look at our own circumstances or horoscopes to see how this force will express itself in our particular lives.

With Venus in Libra now entering the equation with a square to Pluto from the other side, the above-mentioned theme or force can be seen to play itself out in relationships. For example the sex scandals of recent times have really revealed the shadowy underworld of taboos in unexpected places like the Catholic Church, amongst politicians, etc. Pluto is the Lord of the underworld, and what was hidden has come to light, shocking the world into the realization that sex scandals are more prolific in our society than we imagined. So this weekend more may come to light in that regard, for Venus is here like the goddess Persephone in Greek mythology and Pluto the Underworld God who kidnapped her and took her to his underworld kingdom, where she remained trapped as his bride, only to be allowed access to the surface for a brief moment every year. One way or the other, this combination can indicate intense, perhaps even shocking relationship issues this weekend. If anything it suggests an emotionally insatiable need for attention, like a demanding boss who insists you do overtime, or a partner who insists the same in the bedroom. And they may be so charming or manipulative that you just can’t resist. So depending on your nature, you may be on either side of this equation, and hopefully the charm is used to win the other over to a worthy cause, like a diplomat brokering a peace deal between two enemies. Of course that diplomat may make you fell so special until you realize that all his negotiations are conducted in that way.

Our own insecurities about our attractiveness may emerge too, especially if our attempts at winning over another are not succeeding. Or our ability to let go may be challenged. We cannot ever own the other like Pluto when he kidnapped Persephone, as much as we try, and feelings of jealousy and possessiveness need to be resolved if they arise. The need to love intensely or be willing to die for your love may seem rather Gothic, but that is the Jihadi’s modus operandi. Let me prove my religious devotion by blowing myself and others to oblivion to prove a point, with the hope that oblivion is where the pearly gates lie, with their multiple virgins all waiting to serve me. That is the deluded and mundanely distorted perception of a shallow religious zealot who still thinks with his genitals when contemplating the divine kingdom. It’s in the teachings too, clearly indicating the lack of actual spiritual realization in the bewildered world of some pseudo religions. Of course the intertwining of sexual imagery in the esoteric revelations of mystical Hinduism (Bhakti) or Islam (Sufism) also allude to the union of the lover with the beloved, or the love affairs of Krishna with His unwed secret lover Radha, but never for a second are these taken literally by the meditator. They are always understood to be analogous to the union of the soul with the divine source. And it is the contemplation of this kind of “higher love” that is the topmost expression of the Venus-Pluto alignment now. The love of the gopis for Krishna was of that intense sort that was all-consuming and endless, and it is that which enraptures the consciousness of the devotee when experiencing exalted states of “bhava” and “prema”, two Sanskrit terms for types of divine love available to the meditator found in the ancient texts, the Vedas, although long since lost to the spiritual traditions we grow up in on the western half of the globe.

Ultimately we need to look at any feelings of unrequited love, or obsessive neediness as a symptom of some deeper yearning in the psyche. It could stem from some form of abandonment in infancy, or the baby’s separation from the mother at birth, but on a higher level it is described that the soul resides in a state of separation from the divine source and it is that relationship which is the missing link, the key to union and perfection of human life. All other attempts are mundane substitutes in filling the gap, a gap which is bridged by yoga, the word yoga translating to mean “union” in Sanskrit. And when union is even glimpsed for a moment in ones life, one sees that we are all part and parcel of that one original source, that we are all in relationship, that there is no “us and them”, and one can never again feel a vacuum, or perceive the other to be anyone less than our own family, all children of the one original cause of all causes.

Pluto square Uranus – More aftershocks rock our world

Astrology Uranus square PlutoAlthough the long standing square 90 degree aspect between Uranus and Pluto is gradually separating, its global generational influence can still be felt. It hasn’t been exact since March ’15 earlier this year, but has come to within 2 degrees of exact again late this month and all through December ’15, and will be only 1 degree away from an exact 90 degree aspect through January ’16. These outer planets have been closely aligned since 2012, on and off and as explains, they symbolise “…the most significant and most challenging planetary influence in a generation. We are living through a major global upheaval due to, and resulting in rapid evolutionary change.”

Astrologically Uranus symbolises revolution, change, invention and higher awareness. Its effects can be shocking for the status quo, as well as unpredictable. Pluto on the other hand symbolises transformation, globalization, destruction, and renewal. It’s effect is impersonal or generational, though can be ruthless, and extreme. This week’s Paris terror attack is yet another expression of this very catalytic force influencing the entire planet with its ruthless, destructive ideological war for change. The last time in history that this Uranus square Pluto aspect was with us was in the early 1930’s. This was the era of the Great Depression which culminated in WW2, via the rise of extremism and dictators orchestrating political and social upheaval. When we look at the refugee statistics, as well as the Paris terror event this week, we see circumstances that have not been in evidence since WW2. Today’s global economic recession, with its rise in unemployment was just the atmosphere that brought Hitler to power as Chancellor in 1933, during the Uranus Pluto square. Pluto is here expressed in the ruthless power of a dictator, the rise of Nationalism and the use of media propaganda to dominate the zeitgeist of the day, while Uranus symbolises the new technology available – in those days air travel. Nowadays we have the internet as the revolutionary tool of course, though the dictatorship on the rise is that of ISIS and its Sharia Law, that promotes the beheading of enemies or those opposed to the dictates of that Law. In fact anyone not submitting to Sharia is seen as worthy of destruction, so the entire world population is the enemy of Sharia in today’s scenario.

Basically the Uranus – Pluto square is a generational influence symbolising large-scale political, religious or social change and this is perfectly playing itself out in the events we see in Paris but also throughout Europe and the Middle East today. The seeds were planted over the past 4 years with the Arab Spring, and the fruit is ISIS and other fundamentalist offshoots in Africa. Juxtaposed to that we find the rise of the right wing Fascist sector in multiple EU countries. It seems war is on the rise, and whether it was engineered by a higher force to divide and alienate one against another for the sake of arms trade, or whether it is simply humanity at a crossroads, the result is the same. And although the exact planetary aspect between Pluto and Uranus is slowly waning, the death throes are being echoed throughout the streets of almost every continent. And that is what a world war is – a battle fought by numerous sides on numerous continents simultaneously, and although we have not yet officially labelled this WW3, in effect the symptoms of just such an event are already being felt.

And remember that ISIS is not the only power bent on world domination. There are others, much closer to home, who won’t express it as openly, but their plan for the New World Order has been rolling out for decades already. So this power struggle is nothing new, and is not just to be blamed on the other, some foreign shadow figure in black wielding a sword and a black flag. Rather it is with us, we are all a part of it, and it is simply playing itself out more overtly than ever now. Therefore the time is ripe for the people, the masses, the mob – another expression of Pluto as an anonymous collective force – to reclaim our power on the street and rise up to meet the challenge of dictatorial oppression and mass media brainwashing, thereby finding our common humanity and having learned from the past, refusing to allow any elitist or racist separatism to undermine our unity in diversity as one global family ever again.

Mercury “Cazimi” at the heart of the Sun

Merury conjunct sunToday is the day that Mercury goes Cazimi – into the heart of the Sun. The Sun’s rays are so bright that any planet within 8 degrees of the Sun is considered “combust”, and thus its strength in a chart is considered diminished. However, the exception to this is when the planet comes to an exact alignment, within 17 minutes (there are 60 minutes to a degree of zodiac arc.) At this position, as we have today from sunrise South African time at 05h15 in my location, the planet is more powerful than ever in its influence. This peaks at 16h00, which would be an ideal time to conduct your ritual, design your talisman, offer your prayer or meditation to invoke the blessings of Mercury, and continues until 04h00 tomorrow18 Nov. Since Mercury rules the intellect in a horoscope, this will make the intellect burn brighter, so to speak. It is as if the Winged Messenger has entered the throne room for a personal audience with the Sun King directly. The symbolism of Mercury reminds me of Narada Muni, the transcendental space man and eternal sage mentioned in the ancient Vedic texts like Bhagavat Purana, who could travel to all worlds or dimensions – Hell, Earth and Heaven – via the sound vibration he made on his Vina musical instrument. He is allowed the audience of the Divine Lord Vishnu whenever he chooses.

These astrological terms originate way back in the mists of time to the ancient Greeks and Arabs at least since the time of Christ and before, as well as the Ancient Indian masters who even pre-date that. Then the Medieval scholars carried it forward, and it has been handed down ever since. So these are not new concepts, but rather tried and tested observations based on the movement of the stars in the night sky.

Any baby born today with Mercury conjunct or so tightly aligned with the Sun, is blessed to be in possession of some kind of brilliance, and will very likely be an intellectual or business genius. So congratulations to you! Mercury orbitThere are two such points of exact alignment of Mercury and the Sun about 3 times a year, making 6 days in total, and 3 of them, the “Superior conjunctions” – when Mercury is on the far side of the Sun from Earth’s point of view – are most potent. And today is one of those. It is like the full moon stage of this particular planetary cycle. Actually all planets can make this exact alignment with the Sun whenever they are seen as conjunct, though such times occur randomly and less often throughout the year. Because Mercury is so close to the Sun it occurs most often. Venus, being also closer than us to the Sun, also has more regular such exact alignments. And when a planet becomes thus invisible due to the effulgence of the Sun’s rays, its influence becomes less physical and more astral or ethereal in the personality on that day, or in the life of one born that day. So if this article seems highly intellectual yet a bit ethereal or abstract, you know why.

The Bigger Picture – Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius

Astrology, the bigger picture of the cosmosMercury moves into Sagittarius on November 20th, followed closely by the Sun late on 22nd. This is a fiery and optimistic sign for the Royal Sun and his primary winged messenger to be situated, as Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter (aka Jove from where we get the word “jovial”). This is the marathon time of the year for those keen to capitalise on the festive and holiday mood that permeates most of our readers’ lives now. The opportunity to rake it in or dish it out in large doses is available to us all. The mood should be more spontaneous than usual, and “don’t sweat the small stuff” might be the motto of the month.

In our enthusiasm to be honest and frank we may find ourselves inadvertently putting our foot in our mouth, purely innocently of course, for the revengeful malice of Scorpio will have passed by now. Just remember that Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system so with this theme comes the propensity to be a bit extravagant in our generosity or indulgence, with less thought of the credit crunch to follow after the season of good cheer passes. By all means harness that enthusiasm and love of life. Just keep one eye on the bigger picture and your bank balance as well. Explore the great outdoors if you get a chance, expand your horizons by all means, without being careless at least this month.

This is an ideal time to pursue deeper philosophical or moral issues too. Those great rhetorical questions of life, the universe and everything should be asked, for they do indeed have answers. What is life without some depth of meaning, some perspective, some greater purpose, and this is the month to pursue just those insights. Great souls before us have asked just the same questions and have come up with some pretty profound answers, both tried and tested, so you don’t have to start from scratch. Any university library, online website or temple bookshop should give you all the answers you need as to who am I, what is the goal of life, why are there so many stars in the sky, is there life after death, who wrote these laws and what is the best way to implement them. Such moral, judicial and philosophical questions are ripe for the answering now as Mercury allows the mind to comprehend the bigger issues when in Sagittarius. Leave the other times of the year to sort out the day to day detailed stuff, but for this month step back and get the bigger picture, visualizing where your current path is taking you and where you will be in 5 or 10 years from now if you keep on it. Just don’t be too hasty to get there, for time is one thing that can never be replaced once it is lost. Think big if you must, aim high, but remember the little man while you shoot for the stars. We need to be fair in everything we do. No over-optimistic riding roughshod over the other souls on our expansive road to fortune. That would be unethical and thus defeat the very purpose of it all. It’s win-win or no game when you really analyse the scene globally at this stage. There’s no more room to indulge on our ever-shrinking planet, with resources, land, water and other such life-sustaining valuables being scooped up all around by those who can, as it all gets privatised away from under our feet. So bigger may have been better in the old days, but today ethical and sustainable practice will win the day and show the world your true intelligence. The gas guzzler is only looked at with disdain in today’s world. Also the forest guzzler, who in the name of palm oil or soya plantations mindlessly rips up the indigenous forest, like a wolf pack ripping the lungs out of the chest of a buffalo carcass. Those forests are the lungs of the planet, and at the end of the day it’s our fresh air too. Who ever imagined, just a few decades ago, that we would be buying bottled water from a store? Similarly, who can foresee the day when we need to buy our oxygen by the bottle because there is just not enough left floating freely in our atmosphere?

So be bold this month, think big, see the bigger picture, but remember to avoid over-confidence or a glib approach to life that ends up becoming a careless disregard for tomorrow. For tomorrow begins today. Great souls from far off foreign cultures and far distant times in the past have left us guidelines to follow, if you are looking for answers. The rest is common sense. “Keep your feet on the ground when you reach for the stars” is another worthwhile motto now, and you don’t need to know Sanskrit to figure out the meaning of that profound aphorism.
